Top 5 Need-to-Knows for Beginners:
1. Don't be afraid to ask questions. If you're like me, you tend to jump head first into a project... which in some circumstances is a great thing! However, painting & redoing furniture? Not one of those circumstances. Be sure to think through each step & if you don't know what is best, then simply ask someone who knows! When in doubt, talk to someone at Home Depot (at least thats what I do).
2. Latex gloves are your friend. They not only protect your precious little paws from paint drippings, they are also disposable & can be found anywhere! They fit snugly, which in my opinion helps... I've fumbled far too many spray-paint cans in my day using oversized rubber gloves.
3. Patience is key. Be prepared to take your time before you do anything with paint, multiple steps, detailed work, or glue. Don't get to excited about the end result or you'll rush & smudge something! I've stuck my finger in wet paint far too many times. Music helps me relax & enjoy the waiting a little more (check out Andy McKee's acoustic guitar... its my fav).
4. Check the weather before you plan a project. I'm pretty sure I've succeeded to choose the windiest, rainiest, & coldest days out of the year without any help from weather.com... example, Exhibit A:
5. Invest in a 12x15ft General Purpose Tarp. These are great. They are big, durable, can be tied down & will last a long time. I've tried news paper, magazine, even trash bags... and I just can't beat the tarp. You can buy a good one at Home Depot for $25, and in my opinion its worth it!
Hope this helps all you beginner DIY-ers out there!! Happy doing :)
